SATOSHI HAGA
Dancer, Choreographer, Visual Artist, Instructor


Satoshi Haga is a performing and visual artist from Fukushima, Japan, whose career has unfolded over four decades in New York City and abroad. In 2025–26, he was awarded the Hodder Fellowship at Princeton University, a recognition that affirms the breadth of his multidisciplinary practice and his commitment to exploring the body as a vessel of memory, resilience, and imagination.

Haga arrived in New York in the 1980s, immersing himself in ballet with Maggie Black and Finis Jhung, mime with Paul J. Curtis, pantomime with Moni Yakim, and later Balinese dance and Tai Chi. This eclectic training shaped a vocabulary that fuses theatricality, ritual, and abstraction. His early works at Joyce SoHo—including Solo Collections and In the Square—placed him at the heart of the downtown experimental dance scene. His works later expanded to venues such as Japan Society, PS122, The Yard, and Jacob’s Pillow, combining minimalist staging with richly layered physical storytelling.

Beyond choreography, Haga appeared Off-Broadway, most notably as a puppeteer in The Artificial Jungle and in collaborations with Theater Breaking Through Barriers. These experiences broadened his artistic lens, deepening his understanding of accessibility and collaboration in performance. His ability to navigate between intimate experimental venues and larger theatrical stages remains a defining feature of his career.

He has also collaborated with Jen Shyu (composer and vocalist), performing at venues including The Met Breuer / The Metropolitan Museum of Art with Vijay Iyer, The Rubin Museum, Roulette, Jazz Gallery, and other leading music spaces. He has also choreographed and directed performances for Opel and Land Rover at The Tokyo Motor Show.

As a visual artist, Haga occasionally integrates his artworks into binbinFactory’s performances.

His work consistently invites audiences to reflect on how we move, how we connect, and how we endure—questions that remain at the heart of his artistic vision as he continues to create and explore.

He also teaches movement practices rooted in Qi energy and Tai Chi, and conducts healing sessions that integrate body awareness and flow.

福島県出身のパフォーミング＆ビジュアルアーティスト。40年以上にわたり、ニューヨークを拠点に国内外で活動している。2025〜26年、プリンストン大学ホッダー・フェローシップを受賞し、記憶・回復力・想像力の器としての身体を探求する多分野的な創作が評価された。

1980年代に渡米し、マギー・ブラック、フィニス・ヤングに師事してバレエを学び、ポール・J・カーティスにマイムを、モニ・ヤキムにパントマイムを学ぶ。さらにバリ舞踊や太極拳を習得し、演劇性・儀式性・抽象性を融合した身体表現を確立した。ジョイス・ソーホーでの初期作品《Solo Collections》《In the Square》は、ニューヨークの実験的ダンスシーンで注目を集めた。その後、ジャパン・ソサエティ、PS122、ザ・ヤード、ジェイコブズ・ピローなどで作品を発表し、ミニマルな舞台構成と重層的な身体表現を展開。

オフ・ブロードウェイでは『The Artificial Jungle』などに出演し、Theater Breaking Through Barriersとの協働を通じて、パフォーマンスにおけるアクセシビリティの理解を深めた。また、作曲家・歌手ジェン・シューとの共演では、ヴィジェイ・アイヤーとともにメトロポリタン美術館、ルービン美術館、ルーレット、ジャズ・ギャラリーなどで公演を行う。東京モーターショーではオペルおよびランドローバーの演出・振付も手がけた。

ビジュアルアーティストとしても活動し、binbinFactoryの公演に自身の作品を取り入れている。主な展覧会に、Soapbox Gallery（ブルックリン、2012年）、Le Festival de Bargemon（南フランス、2019年）、GROVE 34（ニューヨーク、2022年）、OPTech AI Center（東京、2025年）がある。

福島からニューヨークへ、オフ・ブロードウェイから国際フェスティバルへと広がるその歩みは、探究心としなやかな生命力に満ちている。

現在も、気（Qi）エネルギーや太極拳に基づくムーブメント指導や、身体意識を高めるヒーリング・セッションを行っている。
